Songwriting Contest Finals: tunes protest Arizona immigrant law

It's been in the works for several months and now the protest song contest comes to a head.

In an event titled Sing for Hope and Justice, the finals will be held Friday, Sept. 24.

The Sing for Hope and Justice Songwriting Contest will feature sixteen composers who will present their songs protesting the law in Arizona. GA.

Tickets are $10; VIP $20. Each artist has five

 minutes to present their song at the event scheduled at the Restoration Centre at 6401 Bandera Rd.

Sponsored by the Ruiz family the contest wasorganized to use artists to sing out against the bigotry and racial profiling embedded in the Arizona anti-immigrant law and to embrace justice and fair play especially toward immigrants and their families. 

The styles submitted are varied, ranging from mariachi and Tejano to norteño, rock, banda, hip hop and gospel.

The competition will include songs written and/or performed by René, Jesse Farías of Tropa F, Jorge Alejandro Knott, Bebo Cárdenas accompanied by Los Tres Reyes, Cruz, Méndez-Negrette, Lucia Barragan, Luz M.E. Castro, Andres

Who wrote Latin Breed's "El Tejano Enamorado," perhaps the national anthem of Tejano?

Fermin Limon, longtime Tex-Mex band manager and promoter, was shot and killed late Sunday night.

Limon, 49, was known throughout the music industry as he managed several Tejano and norteno groups including Siggno, Notable, La Contra, and Solido under his Representaciones Limon agency. 

According to officials, Limon was shot after an apparent shootout outside the Punto 3 Night Club, 4012 N. Conway Ave., about 1:30 a.m. Monday. The bar was reportedly owned by Limon.
