Fermin Limon, longtime Tex-Mex band manager and promoter, was shot and killed late Sunday night.
Limon, 49, was known throughout the music industry as he managed several Tejano and norteno groups including Siggno, Notable, La Contra, and Solido under his Representaciones Limon agency.
According to officials, Limon was shot after an apparent shootout outside the Punto 3 Night Club, 4012 N. Conway Ave., about 1:30 a.m. Monday. The bar was reportedly owned by Limon.
Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies said upwards of 250 people who possibly witnessed
the shootout attempting to flee the scene.
According to the McAllen Monitor, Deputies secured the area and found a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper, who was holding two men at gunpoint in front of the club, Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño said in a statement.
Investigators learned a fight inside the club spilled outside, where the off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer allegedly shot the venue’s owner, 49-year-old Fermin Limon.
Investigators initially said Monday morning Limon was unarmed when he was fatally shot in the chest and arm.
But after uncovering a “very reliable and credible” witness to the shooting late Monday morning, the sheriff said investigators now believe Limon had a gun, pointed it at the CBP officer and did not fire. Apparently fearing for his life, the CBP officer fired his agency-issued .40-caliber H&K handgun, hitting Limon twice.
Limon handed his gun to a third, unidentified person, Treviño said, who returned fire at the CBP officer.
“The evidence at the scene cooperates this witness statement,” the sheriff said in a statement. “Our investigation continues attempting to identify the third person and recover the weapon.”
Meantime, we are awaitng funeral services details and we will post here as soon as we get them
Reaction across Central and South Texas has been of shock and sadness.
"I met Fermin in 2004 at his office in San Juan, Texas. As the founder/owner of Felino Records, I had already heard of him and everyone seemed to have a lot of respect for this gentlemen. When I finally met him, he came across as courteous, attentive, profession and dedicated to his record label and its artists. And that is the only recollection I have from that first and only meeting."
Ramón Hernandez, historian/archivist
"I met Fermin like in 98 or 99 when I played with Jody Farias. He was a well mannered man very nice I will always remember him for his love for La musica nortena."
Ali Garza Cardona, bass player for Michael Salgado.
"So sad to hear about Fermin Limon he was so outgoing always so proud of his groups! My prayers are with all those close to him. God bless you all we never know when our last day on earth is so want all of you to know how much you all mean to me."
Genyva Salas
Solido
"Sucks that a good man had to die because of somebody's ignorance. RIP Fermin Limon. May God bless his family and friends!," Gabby Robles
