Billy Powell, longtime Lynyrd Skynyrd pianist dead at 56

Lynyrd Skynyrd, one of rock's legendary bands, has lost their longtime pianist.

Officials report that Billy Powell, the group's veteran keyboardist

, died Tuesday night. Powell was 56.

Powell died at his home near Jacksonville, Florida. Officials report no cause of death as yet.

In an email to media outlets and ontheir website, the band released this short statement:

"Beloved Pianist for the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band, Billy Powell, passed away last night. We have no further details. The family and band request your respect and understanding during this difficult time. Thank you."

It goes on to report:

"Lynyrd Skynyrd is canceling shows due to Billy’s passing. We hope to re-schedule the shows in the near future.  Please refer to www.lynyrdskynyrd.com for updates on touring."

Powell is credited with writing the intro tothe band'ssingature hit "Free Bird." Powell joined Skynyrd in 1973.
