Teddy Pendergrass: R&B legend dead at 59

One of the smoothest, most recognizable voives in R&B music has passed on - Teddy Pendergrass died Wednesday. He was 59.

According the Associated Press, Pendergrass had been hospitalized

for months in suburban Philadelphia. Teddy Pendergrass II, said his father underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had “a difficult recovery.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Pendergrass, who was paralyzed after a 1982 car accident, made his mark in music more than two decades ago.

In his prime in the 1970s, Pendergrass was one of the premier R&B singers in America, leading Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes to the top of the charts with solid soul classics such as "If You Don't Know Me by Now" and "I Miss You."

Years before the crash, Pendergrass was recognized for his blistering  raw voice that symbolized masculinity and passion. His singatyure tunes also included  “It Don’t Hurt Now,” "Close the Door,” and “Love T.K.O.”

Pendergrass was recalled as an influential figure by longtime collaborator Kenny Gamble, of the renowned production duo Gamble & Huff. He teamed with Pendergrass on his biggest hits and recalled how the singer was even working on a movie.
