Little Joe y La Familia – A Tribute To Sunny Ozuna

Tex-Mex pioneer Little Joe pays homage to fellow legend Sunny Ozuna on his latest CD.In this report by our correspondent Rene Cabrera, Little Joe's latest CD is examined.

Little Joe released his latest under

TDI Records in November.

Called “A Tribute To Sunny Ozuna,” the CD takes well known material from the Ozuna vault, dusts it off and showcases it as if to remind us how really good the music of that era was. The music in this CD takes listeners through a variety of styles.  But followers of Little Joe already know this exercise. They know to expect pop and R&B, originals here and there, and the obligatory Jose Alfredo Jimenez torch tunes, all prepared and served up for the Tejano palate.

The CD is loaded with old gold.  Polkas “Reyna De Mi Amor,” “Carinito Que Paso,” and “Las Morenitas,” with lyrics that discuss the qualities of brown-skinned babes. It’s got Jose Alfredo Jimenez ballads “Las Cuidades” and “Cuando El Destino” that familiar ode to sweet revenge with the line that says it well…“pa’ que veas lo que es el precio en las leyes del querer.”  Then there are the R&B tunes that are so much a part of Tejano Music history; “Talk To Me,” “Golly Gee,” and  “Put Me In Jail.”

Joe has never sounded better and the support he gets from his band will warm the hearts of fans of orquesta Tejana as pushed by Joe, Johnny Hernandez, Bob Gallarza, and Ruben and Alfonso Ramos. There’s a wonderful diversity reflected in this CD by tunes that were written by Jose Alfredo Jimenez, alongside tunes that were recorded by the likes of Little Willie John, Tony Bennett and Mickey Gilley over several decades. Which begs the question, what came first, the fan base that demanded these tunes, or the guys with the perceptive know how to offer them?  No le hace.  As Tejanos, we’re all better off for it.
