New venue, categories mark 2009 TMAs

The 2009 Tejano Music Awards will unfold in a new venue and will showcase new award categories say officials.

The deadline for the TMA voting ballot is Feb. 17 while the awards are scheduled April 11.

The new venue is the 4,800-capacity Municipal

Auditorium. It is the awards show’s sixth venue in the last seven years with stops at the Freeman Coliseum, Graham Central Station, Villita Assembly Hall and even the Lucky Eagle Kickapoo Casino in Eagle Pass.

Despite the traveling aspect of the awards, show organizer Ruben Cubillos says the most important thing about the awards is their primary mission:

“The TMA’s mission, from its inception by its cofounders, still hold true 29 years later – to promote excellence, understanding and appreciation for the music,” said Cubillos, executive director of the VIVE Tejano organizer. “The TMAs shall continue to provide a forum to present original artistic efforts.”

Cubillos believes the TMAs are just as important as the Grammys.

“The ‘Tammy’) represents the accomplishments and achievements of a rare breed,” he said. “This unique dynamic is a signature of contribution to a genre self built from a Mexican heritage and it great American influence. Its the best of both worlds.”

The 29th edition of the Tejano Music Awards are scheduled April 11.

This is the first year an advocacy organization such as VIVE Tejano is assisting in the awards presentation.
“We’re here to contribute to TMA’s mission. Our experience, insight and vision also began with cofounders. TMA is living its cycle of life which brings back to the beginning of discovering new talents which will become stars soon. VIVE Tejano brings hope, understanding and a great desire to bridge this culture within itself and beyond.”

In another new wrinkle this year, officials have added four new categories: best new female artist, best new male artist, best new group, horizon award winner. The showband of the year award has been eliminated.

“The new categories give new generation artists an arena of their own and allow them to keep moving forward in expectation as their careers develop,” said Cubillos.

Pop legend Johnny Mathis is releasing a new CD on Sept. 21.

The CD is titled "Let It Be Me: Mathis In Nashville,” and will be released on the famous Columbia Records label.

Who doesn't remember the golden nuggets like "Chances Are" and "It's Not For Me To Say." Mathis harks back to a golden era of music but his vocal talents are timeless. A romantic traditionalist, Mathis made a name in pop and jazz before rock began to rise in pop culture in the '60s.

Mathis handpicked the new tunes and worked with noted producer Fred Mollin and recording engineer Khyle Lenning. Mathis recorded the songs in the studio in a week. Mathis stayed true to the original melodies and country arrangements and he is
