Latin Grammy 2009: Avizo, Gonzalez, Guzman- Updated

Jimmy Gonzalez, Joel Guzman and Avizo were among the familiar names in the 2009 Latin Grammy nominees announced today.

Gonzalez, Guzman and Avizo grabbed best Tejano album nominations in

competition with Jay Perez, Grupo Vida and Jaime Y Los Chamacos.

For the complete regional Mexican list, see below.

Guzman and Sarah Fox were nominated for their acoustic folk album "Conjuntazzo,' a work whose musical style the couple dubbed "conjunto Americana."

Guzman and Fox said they were elated at the news Thursday afternoon:

"I am ecstatic simply because it feels great to finally be acknowledged as one of the artists and not just a participant," said Fox.

Guzman added that: "the Grammy nomination is significant because while we have always been involved with many artists (as producers, collaborators), we have always continued to put out high quality works like 'Short Stories' and 'Latinology.' It always feels great to be acknowledged for our body of work.

"'Conjuntazzo' is kind of a culmination of our heritage, our art and our tradition," Guzman said. "'Conjuntazzo' is a work that features our strength as a team. It feels great to be nominated for that "

DeAnda said he got a lot of calls as before he knew he had been nominated.

“Suddenly we were getting pages, and emails congratulating us, and we didn’t even know about it,” he said. DeAnda said the Grammy nominations was important because “It means a lot of exposure, a lot of marketing opportunities for us. It also tells people we’re still here, still in the game.”

Los Chamacos nominated CD is “Freedom Tour,” and it was released on the Joslin Records label. De Anda said the label name was inspired by his bajo player Rene Joslin, who’s been with him for 17 years.

“We’re very happy to have our own label. We finally got released from Freddie Records after so many years. Now we can record whatever we want, we just have so much more freedom now.“

Now we can try to do something on our own, we can have fun in the studio and not have any restrictions on what we can record.”

DeAnda has been busy in the studio in other projects including a record with Joel Guzman recorded at the Houston International Festival.

That CD is expected be released on the Smithsonian records label shortly.

On Oct. 9, DeAnda joins Guzman and Mingo Saldivar to kickoff the opening night of the 2009 International Accordion Festival at San Antonio’s La Villita.

Avizo was nominated for their "Josefa" CD, a tribute to the mid' 80s Tex-Mex band from Houston.

Other interesting nominees include La Mafia in the best Grupero category for their CD "Eternamente Románticos."

Costumbre, another Tex-Mex band from Zapata, grabbed a nomination for best norteno CD for their latest titled "Siempre."

The 10th Annual Latin Grammys are scheduled Nov. 5 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The awards are to be broadcast live on the Univision Network at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT. www.latingrammy.com.
