E-mail Print PDF

His name may not have been well known but Alex Chilton was widely respected  in music circles.

The man who made his impact with the Box Tops and Big Star died Wednesday at 59. According to news sources, Chilton died at a

New Orleans hospital of a suspected heart attack.

Groiwng up I liked the Box Tops. I grouped them alongside other '60 and '70s magical pop/rockers such as Gary and the Pacemakers, the Loving Spoonful, Paul Revere & Raiders and others.

The Box Tops' most memorable hits included "The Letter," "Cry like a Baby," "Sweet Dream Ladies, Forward March," "People Going to Talk."

All music that evoked that giddy, feel-good mood, that transported you from rainy days to sunny days, melancholy moments to poignant exuberance.

According to SXSW officials, Big Star was scheduled to perform Saturday at Austin's huge SXSX Festival.

SWSX spokesman Brent Grulke released this statement:

"Alex Chilton was an artist of the very highest caliber. It's too early to do much but cry about our loss right now, but he'll be missed, and missed more as the ages pass and his myth continues to expand — that music isn't going anywhere."
