Freddy Fender Memorial Site dedication set 6/6

The life, the magic and continuing influence of superstar Freddy Fender continues to vibrate throughout the Central and South Texas community.

The latest news comes from the city of San Benito, Texas which will host

a Memorial Tribute and Gravesite Dedication in the honor of the late Freddy Fender at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 6.

Freddy Fender (Baldemar Huerta), was born and raised in San Benito. At his passing, it was his wish to be buried in his hometown. 

Throughout his career Fender rose from a struggling rock singer to national fame as a country artists, later becoming a Hollywood actor and member of the superstar groups Los Texas Tornados and Los Super Seven.

The dedication of the Freddy Fender Memorial also signals the official opening of San Benito’s newest cemetery.

The gravesite memorial will commemorate Freddy Fender’s personal and professional accomplishments on six monuments that surround his final resting place. An identical replica of his Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame will also be placed at the site.

Mariachi Universitario will precede the ceremony with a performance at 9 a.m.

Officials are also encouraging fans to visit the Freddy Fender exhibit inside the San Benito Museum. The display contains his Grammy awards, one of his Harley Davidson bikes plus photos and many other artifacts.

Oscar Lawson, a pioneering artist who led a San Antonio group into national acclaim passed away Saturday in San Antonio. He died as a result of a stroke he suffered Wednesday at his home.
