'Love in the Time of Cholera' - endless quests. universal truths

Purpose, fulfillment, clarity and understanding. There are a few of the common traits between people chasing romantic dreams and people pursuing the creative muse.

These are quests that never get old. The movie "Love in the Time of Cholera," struck me as a Latino Wuthering Heights.

The parallels between love and music were

brought into sharp focus when I watched the movie "Love in the Time of Cholera," which recently aired on cable TV. The story, based on award-winning Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez's famous book, is about the endless quest for love and happiness.

After a slow start the movie, about a man romantically obsessed with a teen sweetheart, really got going. Despite the usual cliches of youthful ideals, controlling parents, and social class conflicts, the characters proved sympathetic and intriguing.

It was heartbreaking and mesmerizing to watch Florentino (Javier Bardem) endure his love-from-afar existence.

It was a strange, sad, haunting and ultimately illuminating story on the power of true love and affection.

Toward the end Florentino finally got to be with the woman he loved and waited for after 53 years.

His words, in the elegant letters he wrote to his love, examined our inner spirits and echoed the same views I've always had on the artistic spirit.

I've always believed that young artists (Duffy, Adele, Kany Garcia), like all youth, are always driven by the essential need to make an impact, desperate to be noticed.

Older artists (Eagles, Rolling Stones, U2), like older folks, are driven by the universal need to stay relevant, and desperate to not be forgotten.

Florentino's views were insightful in many levels:
"Age has no reality except in the physical world. The essence of a human being is resistant to the passage of time. Our inner lives are eternal, which is to say that our spirits remain as youthful and vigorous as when we were in full bloom. Think of love as a state of grace, not the means to anything, but the alpha and omega. An end in itself.”

Senior citizens may look old from the outside.

But a deep look into their eyes and their soul will always reveal that the primal drive for love, happiness and fulfillment burns youthful and eternal.

"Love in the Time of Cholera" will continue to air several times this month.

Don't miss it.
