Michael Jackson: icon remembered at MTV VMAs

The 2009 MTV Awards featured a lot of the usual pomp and flash, some bittersweet moments as well as the familiar strangeness we've come to expect through the years. The awards were held Sunday night at the Radio City Music Hall in New York.

The late Michael Jackson's name was brought up numerous times, especially by Madonna

and Janet Jackson in memorable moments. In her opening comments, Madonna lamented the constant and intense media scrutnity Jackson had to endure in his later years. Early in her career Madonna admired Jackson and eventually developed a close friendship. Jackson and Madonna would eventually become the '80s biggest icons.

The MTV Video Music Awards featured performances by Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Eminem, Jack Black, Shakira, Taylor Lautner and Lady Gaga. Opening the awards was a tribute to Michael Jackson featuring sister Janet Jackson, who performed while the video of her duet with Michael, "Scream," appeared on a large screen.

In yet another familiar move, Kanye West blasted the VMAs when Taylor Swift accepted an award he felt Beyonce deserved. The crowd booed; it was certainly not one of West's best moments. West later reportedly apologized to Swift.

Among the highllghts were performances by Green Day, Jay-Z, Pink, Beyonce and others held against an elaborate backdrop which included muliti-level staging and big video screens.
