MikeyMike Promotions: big shows, family fun

It's not easy being a concert promoter. There's a thousand headaches and a million details. When things go swell, no one thinks to thank the promoter.

When things go south, many often point the finger at the promoter. But Houston promoter Mike Barron, 37, of MikeyMike Promotions says that

after several years of working hard, it's all been worthwhile.

But before we get more more insights from Mike, here'sthe details on his latest shows: First the big Pasadena Cookoff featuring Jay Perez on Friday 9/25. That will be followed by the classy Fito Olivarez and his redhot cumbias on Saturday, 9/26. The festival is scheduled at the Pasadena Fairgrounds, Fairmont, Pasadena. $20.

Also at 8 p.m.  Friday, Sept. 25., the club Hallabaloos features Friday Night with David Lee Garza y Los Musicales. Opening the show is Celso Torres y Tejano Fushion. $10.

So what makes the Pasadena fest special?

"The Pasadena Rodeo Bar-B-Que Cookoff is great entertainment for the whole family because it has some much to offer with great food, live music and including a huge carnval," Mike said Tuesday.

As a responsible promoter,he said his objective often goes beyond presenting a top show and solid attendance.

"The ultimate goal is to make enough to cover the cost of the event but its real important for me to make sure to give the people a great show and one that they would want to revist again.

"I have been in the business for about 19 years now but as far as the promotions part I been doing that since 2007 that when I started my company Mikey Mike Promotions."

Mike's been around long enough to have meet some of the biggest names in the biz.

"Most of the shows that I do are club shows and I had the pleasure of working with some of the great Tejano groups in the business such as La Mafia, David Lee, Jimmy Gonzalez, Los Chamacos just to name a few," he said. "I have also worked with other promoters on bigger events such as festivals and other special events."

There's obviously a few forgettable shows, but then there's the excitement of the memorable nights.

"If I had to pick one it would have to be one of my more recent shows that took place this past Labor Day weekend at El Rodeo Disco in Houston. It featured Jimmy Gonzalez y Mazz and Jaime y Los Chamacos and long time well known DJ Homie Marco who now lives in San Antonio," he said.

"It was a trip down memory lane cause the theme was the return of Club EDR which stands for El Dorado Ranch a very famous night club here in Houston in the early 90's and one of the 1st clubs I worked at."

The 37-year-old Tejano promotor graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Houston where he was born and raised.
