NEW CDs: Jorge Moreno mixes country, Tex-Mex; also Raulito, Galvan, Von Army

Tex-Mex singer Jorge Moreno showcases his ability to sing in more than one genre on his latest CD “The Best of Both Worlds.”

Moreno should be familiar to music fans - he's that fair-skinned, good-looking singer with the 1000-watt smile who's played in

various Central Texas events such as the Tejano Music Awards Fanfairs.

We're slow cooking a recent interview with Moreno that we'll post here in a few days.

Meantime, here's our take on his latest CD, as well as a few others:

“The Best of Both Worlds”
Jorge Moreno
Maddox Records
Tejano and bilingual country is showcased by Central Valley, California native Jorge Moreno, a serious fan of both. On the Tex-Mex polkas and cumbias, Moreno has the familiar subtle accent of a second generation Mexican-American. He has a pleasing, distinctive voice that does the job. But, it’s in his country tunes that he stands out, such as the bluesy “Bad Things” and Eddie Rabbit’s “Pretty Lady.” However, the money song here is “El Vaquero Se Ha Marchado,” a Spanish version of George Strait’s “The Cowboy Rides Away.” Moreno and his sterling crew of studio musicians, give an on-the-mark reading of the song’s beautiful, haunting melody. With his dulcet and emotive tones, he convincingly conveys the song’s somber message about riding off into the sunset. Now, a fair question is can Moreno and his own band reproduce this magic live? Given the high quality output here, we're confident Moreno will get it done.

“Simplemente Raulito- Por Mientras”
Raul Navaira
Raulito Records

With superstar Emilio in recovery from a 2008 bus crash, his brother and main songwriter Raul goes it alone – with a prayer for Emilio’s return. Grateful his older brother never wavered in his devotion and protection throughout their 2-decades plus career, Raul wrote the poignant “Bajo De Tu Sombra.” It is an affecting tune where Raul conveys boundless hope, love and appreciation. Overall, Raul is not quite a lead singer. At least not yet. It’s obviously hard, going from second vocals to the front. However, like the great Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Raul compensates through his honesty and visceral emotion. Because he writes the songs, he understands the sentimental power of words and images. CD guests include his daughter Destiny and nephews Emilio IV and Diego. Touching is the bilingual version of Roger Miller’s “Open Up Your Heart,” on finding happiness, one of the first songs that Raul and Emilio learned to sing when they were little.
