Stars perform ‘We Are the World’ for Haiti

LOS ANGELES - More than 75 mega-stars gathered Monday to re-record the 1985 charity anthem "We are the World" in the same Hollywood recording studio where the original was cut 25 years ago.

As most folks recall - that were old enough to have seen and heard the original, -  the original "We Are the World" was produced as a charity single that involved a lot of superstars. It was unprecedented.

At the core was the supergroup USA for Africa. I believe the year was 1985 and the song was co-produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian for the album "We Are the World."

"We are the World" was released on March 7, 1985 and went on to hit the top of the charts around the world. It would also go on to win several awards including Grammys and an American Music Award.

The new single remake for the Haiti benefit was recorded on Feb.1, 2010 in Hollywood, California, and will be released to benefit the impoverished country.

As a side note that charity single in 1985 was a major influence on the Tejano world when a group of Tex-Mex superstars recorded the ill-fated "Tejanos for Hunger" charity single and CD in August 1985 at Joey Records' Zazz Studios.

But eventually that project was marred and sidelined by infighting, controversy and potential lawsuits.
