E-mail Print PDF

Jazz guitarist Herb Ellis was an influential performer who played with the world's top artists in a career spanning six decades.

He died March 28 at his home in Los Angeles. He had Alzheimer's disease.

Among the highlights in his stellar career are his performances with greats such as Jimmy Dorsey and the Casa Loma Orchestra. He was considered one of

the best jazz guitar soloists

From the Recording Academy:

"Herb Ellis was a renowned jazz guitarist who was devoted to playing what he called 'straight-ahead…mainstream' jazz. A two-time GRAMMY® winner as a member of the Oscar Peterson Trio, he had a long, dynamic career playing with many fellow jazz greats including Jimmy Dorsey and Ella Fitzgerald. As jazz has changed through the years and different styles have developed, Ellis always remained true to the form he played from the beginning. The jazz world has lost a great musician, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who enjoyed his work."

Neil Portnow

President/CEO The Recording Academy®

"There have been changes in jazz and new styles come along. I play straight ahead, what you might call mainstream, jazz," Ellis told the Columbus Dispatch of Ohio in 1996. "That's what I played when I started and that's what I still play. I wish everyone else good luck and God bless, but I've found mine and I'm going to stick with it."
