Home Music Tejano / RegMex Protests against Arizona law spurs songwriting contest; artists boycott
E-mail Print PDF

Arizona's controversial and stringent immigration law has generated strong complaints, boycotts and now a songwriting contest.

The songwriting contest is being presented by Dr. Paul Ruiz in reaction to the recent enactment of Arizona Senate State Bill 1070 which Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law.

The songwriting contest features $10,000 in prizes. Details on the contest will be released Tuesday in San Antonio in a news conference hosted by Maria Antonietta Berriozabal, 1992 candidate for Major of the City of San Antonio. The main guideline for this contest is that the tune must address the controversial new immigration law in Arizona decrying it’s injustice in any music genre.

According to contest officials, several

top Tex-Mex artists will be in attendance at the conference including Little Joe, Adalberto, Michael Salgado, Raulito Navaira, Patsy Torres, Rosalinda Risso, Juan Manuel Ayala of Los Humildes, Rene Rene, María Elena of Los Sunglows, Ruco Villarreal, Gilbert Rodríguez of the Bluenotes, Nick Villarreal, and Elio Quintanilla. Additional details at (210) 979-0575.

Meanwhile in a North American scale, several top artists have also voiced their opposition to the new law. These include Los Tigres del Norte, Juanes, Calle 13, Café Tacuba, Cypress Hill and Ozomatli.

This collective artist movement is known as the Sound Strike and was organized by Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha.

In a statement, De La Rocha said, "Fans of our music, our stories, our films and our

words can be pulled over and harassed every day because they are brown or black, or for the way they speak, or for the music they listen to."

The response has been one of overwhelming solidarity.

Raul Pacheco, singer/guitarists of Ozomatli expressed his view: "'We are all offered many choices everyday. Today we are offered the choice to support Arizona's SB1070 or stand against it. Ozomatli chooses to wholeheartedly stand with humanity and against SB1070.

"We stand with a humanity that includes the right of all people to fight for their own lives survival. The history of the people of this world, with all its numerous resources, has been one that often does not support the many that simply want a better life. What choice do you make today? Ozomatli chooses to support the right of all to stand for their own dignity. Therefore we are wholeheartedly against SB1070."
