Home Music Tejano / RegMex Esteban Jordan: accordion legend dead at 71
E-mail Print PDF

Yes it's true. The telephone calls and text messages had continued incessantly since about 9 p.m. Was it true? The exact time is not known but the conjunto legend Esteban Jordan died late Friday. He was 71. FUNERAL DETAILS BELOW

Jordan had been chronically ill in recent years, suffering from liver cancer. Jordan was one of a kind. He was temperamental, reclusive, stand-offish.

But on stage the Grammy nominee and Tejano Conjunto Hall of Famer was electric, able to squeeze more tones out of an

accordion than most ordinary players. He could jump from rock to blues to norteno to conjunto styles in a micro-second.

He was not easy to get to know. He was not really affable - unless you really knew him- and he actually let you get close to him.

Funeral details:
This is all the details that have been announced:
Mass Celebration of Esteban "Steve" Jordan, 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19. San Martin de Porres, 1730 Dahlgreen St.

The old cliche was that Jordan was the Jimi Hendrix of the accordion. That is accurate only in the description of his speed, intensity and frenzy with which he often played. But the comparison falls short of the complex man and the talented, introspective musician that he was.

Jordan was also given an all-star tribute at the 2010 Tejano Conjunto Music Festival.

The news and meaning of Jordan's death will continue to reverberate far beyond Texas and North America well into next week. Historians will also note that one of conjunto's towering giants and accordion masters has left behind a unique legacy.

"He used to stay with us sometimes when he came into San Antonio a long time ago," said longtime music industry rep Betsy Escobedo. "My little son would ask me when he would come to town 'Is the pirate staying with us mom?'"

"Esteban Jordan is one of the true pioneers," said Juan Garcia, of the Garcia Brothers.

Azeneth Dominguez, longtime owner of of Saluté International Bar was one of Jordan’s steady friends.

“It was his time,” Dominguez told the Express-News. “He looked so peaceful at the end. He died old-school style.”

Check back for funeral details from Castillo Funeral Homes at 520 N. General McMullen Drive. We will post as soon as they are confirmed.
