Big names and familiar stars make up the lineup of the 2011 edition of the Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio.

Top artists at the fest include Mingo Saldívar y sus Tremendos Cuatro Espadas, Ricky Naranjo y Los Gamblers, Gilberto Pérez y sus Compadres, Hometown Boys and Los Dos Gilbertos.

While Tejano music may be getting most of

the headlines in recent years, conjunto, it’s older folksy cousin, has thrived in Central and South Texas and along the U.S.-Mexican border since the early 1900s. Unlike Tejano, which makes more use of modern instruments such as keyboards, horns and synthesizers, conjunto relies basically on two instruments – the bajo sexto and the accordion.

Conjunto also relies more on mixing elements of the blues, soul, folk and country.

The festival kicks off Tuesday May 10 with a Seniors Conjunto Dance at the Guadalupe Theater featuring local legend Henry Zimmerle y su Conjunto San Antonio with special guest Nick Villarreal.

Next up is the Conjunto Music Hall of Fame Dinner & Baile on Thursday, May 12, also at the Guadalupe Theater. According to fest organizer, Juan Tejeda, the evening promises to honor the past and present inductees of the Conjunto Music Hall of Fame. That event also will feature the “Best of the 29th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival” CD Release Party.

Then on Friday May 13, the fest rolls on at Rosedale Park with a solid lineup Lo Mejor de Conjunto: La Tradición Continúa featuring Los Tremendos Alacranes de David Flores, Los Monarcas de Pete y Mario Díaz, Jaime y Los Chamacos and Joel Guzmán Sarah Fox y Conjuntazo.

Another heavyweight night of stars is set for Saturday, May 14. The party will include Conjunto Kingz de Flavio Longoria, Linda Escobar, Mickey y sus Carnalez, Oscar Hernández & The Tuff Band, Boni Mauricio y Los Máximos and Mingo Saldívar.

The final day unfolds Sunday with the headliners Eva Ybarra
