Page #

(Tragedy never fails to stun and shock us when it comes. In this case, the late great Lionel Pulido. Our correspondent Ramon Hernandez files this report and photos on the death of a famed musician.)

How does a family handle so many deaths?
“The first to pass on was Leonel’s brother Luz, then his brother Martín. Martín was only 45 and Leonel took it real hard,” a grief-stricken (José) Roberto “El Primo” Pulido said in a telephone call to this writer following the burial services for his uncle Leonel Pulido.
“Those were followed by the death of
Leonel Guerra and now Leonel, cuatro seres queridos de mi sangre, pero todo esa en la mando de Dios.
“What is strange we had just performed in Poteet with Los Desperadoz. Then Leonel had called to tell me Genaro Aguilar had been hospitalized for a heart attack and he is now okay, Roberto continued with turned out to be a twist in fate.
“Leonel was not only my uncle and a musician in my band, but I also lost my compadre and my hero.
“I remember when we worked the fields California and he bought his first accordion without realizing it was a reversible chromatic accordion. To understand the layout of the buttons, we took a picture, had it printed it in reverse and he learned to play it on his own, a feat that even David Lee Garza marveled at. And my uncle also had his own unique style.”
Leonel Pulido, was born in La Palmita, Nuevo León, Mexico, but the well-recognized accordionist lived in Elsa, Texas for most of his life.
In January of

1974, his nephews, Joél “Gordo,” saxophone; Roél “Flaco,” saxophone; José Roberto, bajo sexto and vocals; and he, on accordion, formed the original Los Clasicos. The rest as they say is history.
On Tuesday, June 19, Leonel suffered a heart attack as he was being transported in an ambulance to Edinburg Regional Medical Center when he died enroute. He was 67.
As an acclaimed accordionist, Leonel’s musical legacy will live on through his hundreds of recordings with Roberto Pulido y Los Clasicos.
Our most heartfelt condolence go out to the Pulido and the Olivares families
