Ramon Ayala: to remain detained in Mexico City jail

Norteno star Ramon Ayala will continue detained in a Mexican jail for 40 days while authorities investigate his links to a drug cartel party raided last week.

According to several Mexican news reports, Ayala was arrested when Mexican military raided the mansion of a drug cartel where Ayala was providing the entertainment

at a party. Also performing were Los Cadetes de Linares and Grupo Terrente.

Ayala was reportedly performing for a drug cartel's Christmas party - or narcoposada? - in a ritzy subdivision of Tepoztlan, Mexico on Saturday.

Original news reports said that Ayala, a Latin Grammy winner, had been released after authorities had questioned him during a military operation as part of a crack down on drug gangs.

However, new reports on Friday indicate Ayala will remain detained in a federal jail in Mexico City for 40 days while authorities investigate and determine where any criminal charges will be filed against Ayala for supposed links to the Beltrán Levya drug cartel.

In a Notimex report, Mexican Attorney General Arturo Chavez told reporters that any possible charges against the musician would be determined by the investigation. Ayala and his grtoup, who have not been charged, have been held in Mexico since Dec. 11.

Several musicians were detained and released but officials did not specify which ones or from which groups.

Ayala's attorney Adolfo Vega Elizondo was quoted as saying Ayala could face charges of being involved with organized crime and/or money laundering.

“That is totally false,” Vega told the Associated Press. “He has never been involved with any organized crime. They (band) were just performing their services as artists.”

Officials from the Mexican district attorney's office said that during the raid a gunfight resulted in the deaths of three gunmen while another 11 gunmen were detained.
