Elida: 'New flavors can help invigorate Tejano'

Sometimes, when a musical genre or a certain artist begins to stagnate, the best prescription is change.

ElidaCover 300 5 2008.JPGIt could be a new direction, a new sound, or simply cooking up a new recipe by mixing the old with the new.

"Tejano music, in general, has reached a certain plateau,"said  Tejano singer Elida in a recent interview. "I feel it is not going anywhere. You sort of have to change with the times, get a feel of what is out there."

Elida has taken her own prescription, so to speak. She's taken her step in a new direction, on her latest CD "Domingo." She and her group went for more of a pop cumbia feel, to, as she puts it, "find a new and different sound.

"I think this whole new album is fresh sounding. We used more acoustic guitars," Reyna said in a recent interview. "I would say the songs have a more mainstream cumbia beat. Mainstream in the sense that you can hear the sound of Mana or Juanes, but with a female voice."

Check it out for yourself. "Domingo" is available at record stores and online at Amazon.comand other websites.
