The 2008 Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio is only days away.
This year features themes including "Women in Conjunto Music" and "Homenaje a Lydia Mendoza" that will showcase performances by
El Conjunto Baraja de Oro, Dueto Carta Blanca de George y Mague, Linda Escobar, Joel Guzman & Sara Fox, Santiago Jimenez, Jr., Eva Ybarra, and others.
There will also be a "Tribute to Tony De la Rosa: His Style and Legacy" featuring Boni Mauricio y los Maximos, Los D Boyz, Alfredo De la Rosa, Cuatro Rosas and Bernardo y sus Compadres.
In addition, the festival will offer food and refreshment booths, an accordion raffle, student recital and more. The TCF takes place at the Guadalupe Theater and Rosedale Park on May 7-10.

Fans and supporters of ranchera great Tito Guizar have begun a movement for a star of the late actor/singer to be placed on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame.

On what would have been Guizar's 100th birthday (last week), organizers presented a small celebration in his honor at the Million Dollar Theater in Los Angeles.

There were performances by various artists and groups including Manuel Lopez Ochoa, Los Alegres de Teran, Ramon Inclan, Gilberto Moret, Samantha Orozco, Martin Espino, Belen Gallardo, Jaime Jaimes, Grupo Estrella, Lupita Fernandez, Ballet Xhenat and Mexican charros.


Also performing were Guizar's son, Tito Jr. and daughter, Lilia Guizar Noriega.

Guizar, whose real name was Federico Arturo Guizar Tolentino, was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco. He was a famous ranchera singer and a popular actor who appeared in several Hollywood Films.


He sang at the Hollywood Bowl and also sang at Carnegie Hall and the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.

Sara Mijares, head of the Federation Yucatecas USA and Fundacion Mundo Maya, was among several officials in favor of the Guizar Hollywood star.

As part of the celebration, two awards were presented. Norma Vega, representing Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, accepted the Tito Guizar Centennial Award on the major's behalf.

And Eleanora Romo Olmos, mother of actor Edward James Olmos, accepted a similar award on her son's behalf. Other actors and entertainers slated to receive the the Tito Guizar Centennial Award include Placido Domingo, Yma Sumac, Roberto Cantoral and Lupita Tovar.

Familiar faces took the top prizes at the Billboard Latin Music Awards including Juanes, Juan Luis GuerraJenni Rivera, Daddy Yankee, Aventura, R.K.M. and Ken-Y.
