Guitar legend Bo Diddley, considered one of rock's founding fathers, died on Monday at the age of 79.

As reported in this Washington Informer story, Rock 'n' Roll Legend Bo Diddley Dies in Florida,  Diddley banged out hit songs powered by the relentless "Bo Diddley beat" that influenced rockers from Buddy Holly to U2.

In a statement released by Recording Academy, Grammy president Neil Portnow said:

"A Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Bo Diddley was one of rock 'n' roll's true pioneers. He inspired legions of musicians with his trademark rhythm and signature custom-built guitar, and his song "Bo Diddley" earned a rightful place in the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame. He leaves an indelible mark on American music and culture, and our deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends and fans. The 'Bo Diddley beat' surely will continue on."

Diddley's management agency, Talent Consultants International, released this statement:

"One of the founding fathers of rock 'n' roll has left the building he helped construct."

Diddley suffered a stroke during a concert in Iowa in May 2007 and was hospitalized in Omaha, Neb. In August 2007 he had a heart attack in Florida.

As a live performer, Diddley was mezmerizing. He exude a confidence that was rare, andhe played with power and grace. I got to see Diddley only once and he was unforgettable, as detailed in my 1999 concert review: Retroshot: 'Rocker Diddley amazes fans'
