'Ylse': new exciting, groundbreaking Latino web series launched
Crooked Stilo to play LA's Knitting Factory in Hollywood
(Filed by our Corpus Christi correspondent Rene Cabrera)
For nine years Linda Escobar has been honoring the memory of her father, Eligio,
with an event she and her small band of like-minded organizers call "El Veterano Conjunto Festival."
The 10th in the series is set for Sunday, Nov. 9 at the High Chaparral in Robstown.
The event seeks to raise money to fund the Eligio Escobar Scholarship Fund. Veteran Tejano Music fans know Eligio Escobar from his unique delivery and by his many interpretations of Jose Alfredo Jimenez creations. But Eligio Escobar also had success with other tunes. "El Gambler," "Cuando Dos Almas," and
"El Veterano," a tune he wrote about his experiences as a soldier in the U.S. Army during the occupation of Japan after WWII, were his most prominent. Ironically, Escobar's first recording was a bilingual version of "South of the Border." Eligio Escobar passed away in 1994 at age 67.
Both Eligio and daughter Linda Escobar are staunch members of the conjunto community and well known wherever that music is played. It's an old story, but worth repeating that Linda started singing at a very early age and by 8 recorded "Frijolitos Pintos," a tune that was played on radio throughout the country. It has been reported that "Frijolitos Pintos" sold a million copies in 1965. Eligio and Linda toured the US and Mexico in the 60's as part of "caravanas" that included some of the biggest names in Mexican and Tejano Music.
