Has anyone noticed that it is becoming a meaner, nastier world out there?
Or, is it just me and my famous worry beads?

The daily news reports and TV headlines, the bloggings and emails are becoming more gloomy and doomy every day.

Job layoffs, cutbacks, downsizings, business shutterings, bankruptcies, inflation worries. Not to mention global warming, pollution and new disease risks. In this new inflationary environment, the buzz words are increasingly bandied about - rising food and fuel costs, commodity spikes, wage pressures and emerging-market forces.
Yes, I know.
This is a music column, not an economic news column.

However, the tough economic reality we live in only underscores and sets up one of the few good news stories we're had in a while. And that's that the 2008 Tejano Music National Convention will bring fans a ton of goodies:

Top talent, rare tag-teams, special performances, unusual opportunities. Not to mention excitement, inspiration, wonderment, thrills, chills, fun, fulfillment. 16300.jpg

The annual Tejano Music Convention and Awards is celebrating it's 5th anniversary this year in a new venue. The 2008 edition of the convention is taking place at the Dallas Convention Center/Hyatt Regency in Dallas, on Aug. 15-17.

Activities will include several concerts, dances, achievement awards, Tickets are on sale through www.Tejanoticket.com or through (913) 397-8850.
According to convention founder and executive producer David Chavez and the LatinPointe group, the previous conventions have taken place in Las Vegas.
"After four successful years in Vegas, we can coin a new phrase: What happened in Vegas just moved to Dallas," Chavez told the Dallas Morning News.

The list of artists and performers is a veritable who's who in Tex-Mex circles. It includes Avizo, Megan Leyva, Veronica Sustaita, Candace Vargas, Joe Bravo, Jimmy Edward, Johnny Hernandez, Alfonso Ramos. Sunny Ozuna, Rudy Palacios, Sunny Sauceda, Jaime y Los Chamacos, La Sombra De Tony Guerrero, Fama, Jay Perez, Jimmy Edward, Shelly Lares, Malo, Electric Cowboys, Hometown Boys, Los Garcia Brothers, David Marez, Joe Posada, Los Texmaniacs, Rick Trevino, Flaco Jimenez, Ruben Ramos, Roberto Pulido, Chente Barrera, Elida Reyna.

Much more, coming this week in a later report.
