Mexican rockers Café Tacuba and Tex-Mex artists Emilio and Kumbia All Starz were among the nominees for the 2008 Latin Grammys announced recently in Los Angeles.
The 2008 Latin Grammys are scheduled Nov. 13 for the first time in Houston, at the Toyota Center and will be broadcast live on the Univision network. Tickets for the Latin Grammys are on sale at www.toyotacentertix.com, or via phone at (866) 446-8849.

Gloria Estefan selected as the 2008 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year
Cafe Tacuba grabbed six nominations including album, record of the year and song of the year for their latest CD "Sino."Colombian rocker Juanes was also a big nominee grabbing five nominations for his CD "La Vida ... Es Un Ratico," including record, album, and song of the year.
Additional multiple nominees included Puerto Rican crooner Kany García, Argentine musician Andrés Calamaro, and Mexican songstress Julieta Venegas.
Emilio, Kumbia All Starz and Freddie Martinez were among the nominees in various Tex-Mex categories. Emilio'slatest CD, "De Nuevo," was nominated in the best Tejano album category.
On Emilio's reaction, his manager Joe Casias said:
"Emilio is aware he has been nominated for a Grammy," he said. "He is in Houston and his family and himself are excited about it. But he continues in his recovery."
Emilio was seriously injured in a bus tour accident last Easter Sunday. He has undergone a couple of operations in his recovery from a serious head injury.

The Kumbia All Starz were nominated for best pop album for their latest CD "Planeta Kumbia."
Another familiar name, Argentina's Gustavo Santaolalla, also grabbed several nods in the Latin alternative movement. He took four nominations as producer of recordings for by Juanes and Café Tacuba.
New faces this year included Roberta Sá (Brazil) and Diogo Nogueira (Brazil) and Mónica Giraldo (Colombia), and Kany García (Puerto Rico).
Ranchera king Vicente Fernández was nominated in the album of the year category for his latest, the Joan Sebastian-produced "Para Siempre."
Meanwhile, in Houston, several pre-Latin Grammy concerts are being planned. These include

Also, Grammy award-winning pop singer Gloria Estefan was been announced as the 2008 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year.
"The Latin Recording Academy and its Board of Trustees are elated to recognize Gloria Estefan as an extraordinary Latina woman, humanitarian and talented musician who has made a global impact on music and culture," said Latin Recording Academy President Gabriel Abaroa.
"She is one of Latin music's most enduring icons, and we are privileged to be honoring such a dedicated, generous, and gifted lady."
In making the announcement, the Latin Recording Academy® noted that Estefan was selected for her philanthropic, cultural and professional accomplishments. Estefan will receive the honor at a star-studded concert and tribute dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.
Estefan is the ninth Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year honoree and is the first woman to receive the honor. She joins a prestigious list of previous honorees, which includes Julio Iglesias, Ricky Martin, and Carlos Santana.

In other awards news the 2008 Class of Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame inductees will include singer Emilio, famed DJ Rosita Ornelas and conjunto duo Los Dos Gilbertos.
According to ROOTS Vice-President Heriberto "Herbie" Lopez, who used to play with El Conjunto Bernal, the ROOTS ceremonies are scheduled Nov. 14 and 15 in Alice's VFW Hall.
The Friday event starts at 7 p.m. and features performances by Latin Express featuring Sunny Ozuna and Johnny Hernandez. Saturday night will open with an official welcome by Alice Mayor Juan Rodriguez. The invocation will be delivered by Rudy Guerra and members of his Ministry.
Afterwards, the dance will feature Jimmy Edward and the Latin Express and Los Dos Gilbertos.
Inductees also include Raul, Emilio's brother, and Bobby Solis for drummer in the MiIlion Dollar band.
Solis is brother of well-known San Antonio drummer Richard Solis.
