Coming up:
La Mafia vs Kumbia All Starz in 'mano a mano'
Reggaeton shows coming up
The big weekend includes the usual Tejano and conjunto highlights, but also a new "deathmatch" between La Mafia and the Kumbia All Starz. More on that below.
Meantime, tickets have gone on sale for Luis Miguel's new tour dates in Texas. He stops in San Antonio on Oct. 14 at the AT&T Center. Luis Miguel was last here in 2005. From one of my recent LM reviews: "The 13-piece band was tight and on the money, particularly the awesome horn section.
"Luis Miguel injected a new slower reading of the classic bolero 'No Me Platiques Mas,' on the art of denial, and later produced a new lament on 'Contigo Aprendi,' a lovely tune about how life begins when true love is discovered. It was during this brief bolero segment, that Luis Miguel seemed to really get into his songs. He concentrated and worked hard, trying to produce the hypnotic and addictive qualities of a live performance that make for great moments.
"It is these moments when an artist tries his hardest to find new meanings or reach new emotions to produce a different interpretation of a great song, that truly connects with and ignites audiences."
Luis Miguel's most recent album, "Cómplices," debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart in May.
And we also have Tejano golden boy Bobby Pulido back in town tonight for a concert Friday at Graham Central Station. Pulido is following in the steps of his dad Roberto Pulido plays a solid blend of conjunto, Tejano and cumbias.
And then we have the world wrestling federation-style mishmash between La Mafia and the Kumbia All Starz. Like the WWF, the groups are hoping that by boasting, posing, huffing, puffing and otherwise trying to look mean and tough, they can create enough curiosity to get enough fans out there.
The show is scheduled Saturday in Robstown.
And then we have Jesse Deleon/Variety Mix Friday at Cadillac Bar, 212 S. Flores. And also the Cancionero Mexicano showcase by the Hispanic Heritage Society.Directed by Cristina Ortega, the event will include Voces de San Antonio and will showcase corridos, rancheras, serenades and more. 4 p.m. Aug. 4. Instituto Cultural de México, 600 HemisFair Plaza Way. $10. (210) 822-3247.
