For more than three decades, singer Joe Jama has been one of San Antonio's prize jewels.

Unfortunately, like several other local and regional musicians, Joe Jama has fallen ill and is struggling with limited resources to get medical treatment for his  diabetes and related complications.

And in another San Antonio tradition singer Rene Garcia, of the Five Star Band,.has come forward and organized a benefit, scheduled 5 p.m.-midnight Sunday at the Blanco Ballroom, 3719 Blanco Rd.. Tickets are $10 and there will also be raffles.

We asked Rene why he stepped forward:

"Because Joe Jama has been playing here for 50 years. He's sung at every benefit I have ever been at," Garcia said. "He's an unsung hero in S.A. He's not famous but he has tremendous talent, his vocals sound as good as Al Green."

The Super Star Tribute/Joe Jama Benefit is to help defray medical costs.

The linup includes (in this order) Ernie Garibay, Jorge Alejandro, Joe Posada, Roger Velasquez, David Marez, Ruben Ramos-Sunny-Ramiro Herrera. Also performing will be 5 Star Band, Terri & The Flashback, Rocky OBG Band, etc.
