In a recent interview, Leyva talked about her start in music and the struggle to launch her career here in SA.

"I started singing in the Tejano industry when I was 13. That's when I recorded my first demo. My family and I had been traveling back and forth every single year to go to the awards and to do things that needed to be done for the CD and the promotion of it."

She talked about what it felt like to be among the nominees for the 2006 TMAs.

"It was a really proud moment for all of my family and I. You almost get rewarded for the work that you put into it. We were pretty excited.."

What's the worst and the besr part of about trying to make it here?

"The worst is just the music industry. It's very hard. There's always a door that's going to get closed in your face, but there's always another one that's going to be opened. You just can't give up. You've got to look for the next door that's going to be opened for you. That's the worst part of it, is that it's a tough industry in general.

"The best part of it, I would say, it's a reward for me when I perform and we have a good performance and especially this time of year, at Fan Fair, is the best. Those are the people who are coming from all over the country, just to celebrate Tejano music. The best part of it is performing and getting audiences' reaction to the performance and everything like that. It makes it all worth it, if that doesn't sound too cheesy."
