Yolanda Del Rio Pt II: Songs that strike a chord
Yolanda Del Rio Sings From the Heart
By Ramón Hernández
When Yolanda Del Rio performs, she opens up the tear ducts of her audience in a form of soul cleansing.
Women break down and cry.
Even machos get watery eyed because they, along with her, are reliving different episodes in their lives.
With each note, the Grammy Award nominee is pulling out sentiment and passion from deep within her soul and her plaintive cry for love is heartfelt because she is drawing from her own experiences, especially when she sings "La Hija de Nadie" ("Nobody's Child").
One can feel the suffering, the grief, the unhappiness and the heartache because she interprets each lyric as an actor expresses each line of a script with emotion, even in Portuguese.
"Someone in the audience may be an illegal child, orphaned or deprived of a parent, or both parents by death. They could also have been abandoned at birth, as a baby, tot or adolescent and they don't have a sense of belonging. Or it could simply be that it tugs at the heartstrings of a person, who does not know his biological parents."Over the years, the tune that catapulted the Pachuca, Hidalgo native into stardom became a hymn for the single mother, for the unwed giver of life. "What strikes a major chord with many people is that there will always a hijo (son), or hija (daughter) de nadie (of no one)," the international mega-star said during an interview at the Hispanic Entertainment Archives.
"I'm sad to say there will always be hijas y hijos de nadie because young girls and women still come up to me, hold up their babies and say, 'está es la hija de nadie. The father skipped out on me and left me to fend for myself and the baby. Men like these don't deserve to live.' These women cry because they identify with the lyrics. On the positive side, it has hit home with men who have forsaken a mother and child."

Unfortunately, it is a theme that will never die because men continue to be guilty of scattering kids all over the world, so the song is eternal. The million selling song contains no curse words, no innuendo, no grossness, no fancy arrangements, no hooks and you cannot dance to it. Yet it continues to sell to new generations and it is the tune that gets the most applause as the Grammy Award nominee belts it out with tears streaming down the cheeks of her face.
PAYING HER DUES
Noticing her eyes getting misty as she spoke, an inquiring mind wanted to know if her signature tune was also autobiographical.
